Don’t forget to have fun

This post is mostly a reminder for myself. I’ve definitely posted about this before, but when I’m making music or thinking about music and analyzing music I sometimes get so serious when I’m doing it that I forget why I got into music.

I started playing guitar because it was fun.

So it should still be fun.

Sometimes I think musicians get so focused on getting gigs or writing better music or improving their skills or whatever they’re getting into that it sometimes ends up not being fun. But make it fun. It should be fun. Even if your practice sessions aren’t optimal. If optimal means sacrificing enjoyment then I don’t think it’s optimal.

To me an optimal practice session is one where I improve AND enjoy my practice time. I got into music because I enjoyed it, when sacrifice that enjoyment for anything?
