Don’t be afraid to make a ruckus
July 13, 2021I’m taking some language from Seth Godin here, but in writing music I often feel a push to write something that’s “safe”, even if that’s not what expresses what I’m trying to express.
And composing as an act has been a huge balance between these two things; write what I want to express or write what is “safe.”
But I don’t think that writing “safe” music makes for good music. It’s not as honest and intentional as writing music that might not be as safe.
Quick caveat – these two can often line up and if they do that’s great, but what I mean is write the music you want to write, whether or not you think other people will enjoy it.
